How to choose sunglasses for yourself

Posted: under General Interest.

The ins and outs of sunglass selection

Fashion and image play a large role in sunglass selection and the advertising onslaught in TV and films that portray the celebrities in ‘cool’ sunshades have continued to increase their popularity as a fashion icon. Styles can range from conservative to outrageous, and come in every conceivable colour. There is a certain mystique when someone wears sunglasses. It is often said that the eyes are the windows to the soul, so it is no wonder that a device that hides them makes the wearer seem more provocative and mysterious says Designer Fashion Trends.

The Sunglass lens Lenses come in various shades and a ranges of colours. They are also made in solid tints and in gradient tints, where the top of the lens is darker than the bottom. However, the two most important aspects to bear in mind are the transmittance properties and optical properties

Colour Tinting The colour of the tint determines the parts of the light spectrum that are absorbed by the lenses. Manufacturers use different colours to produce specific results. Gray tints are great all-purpose tints that reduce the overall amount of brightness with the least amount of colour distortion. Gray lenses offer good protection against glare, making them a good choice for driving and general use. Yellow or Orange tints reduce the amount of blue light while allowing a larger percentage of other frequencies through. Since blue light tends to bounce and scatter off a lot of things, it can create a kind of glare known as blue haze. The yellow tint virtually eliminates the blue part of the spectrum and has the effect of making everything bright and sharp, that’s why snow glasses are usually yellow or orange colour. This tint really distorts colour perception, which makes it inappropriate for any activity that relies on accurate colour. Amber and brownish tints are also good general purpose tints. They have the added benefit of reducing glare and have molecules that absorb higher frequency colours, such as blue, in addition to UV rays. There has been research that suggests that near-UV light frequencies such as blue and violet can contribute to the formation of cataracts over time. These tints also distort colours similar to yellow lenses, but increase contrast and clarity. Green tints filter some blue light and reduce glare but because green tints offer the highest contrast, clarity and greatest visual acuity of all the tints, they are the most popular. Purple and rose tints offer the best contrast of objects against a green or blue background. They make a good choice for hunting or water skiing. Dark Rose/red tints are good sports lenses that increase visual efficiency and the degree of image definition in poor visibility, and flat light conditions. They cut back the reaction time in situations improving both sports performance and safety such as Designer Sunglasses.

Gradient Colour Tinting A coloured coating is applied as a gradient that gradually changes shades from top to bottom. This provides additional protection from light coming from above while allowing more light to come in from below or straight ahead. The Gradient lens is THE preferred choice of military and commercial aviators. The top gradient acts to block the sun’s glare at the top of the lens, while providing a clear view of the dashboard and instruments at the bottom. Gradient lenses allow easy reading of charts and instruments inside an aircraft or a car while protecting your eyes from UV rays outside. Aircraft pilots choose thin light frames to house these lenses because frames with thin, strong arms are comfortable while wearing headsets. Police officers who work outside use these Sunglasses because they are very durable and resist scratching while providing the best possible protection from UV rays - a must for pilots and drivers alike!

Transmittance properties. The “luminous transmittance” value denotes the amount of light that the lens lets pass through. The higher its value, the more light the lens absorbs and the less light it lets pass through. The other main objective is to make sure that our lenses have good optical quality and give accurate, sharp vision without distortion.

We also ensure tha the lenses give protection against UV radiation, good clarity of vision and colour fidelity and are suitable for driving. Some sports glasses are not suitable for driving because they distort colour -.Lenses that distort colours for long periods of time can cause headaches, eyestrain and fatigue. As well as being uncomfortable, the inability to distinguish colours can be dangerous- for example if you were unable to recognise the colour red at traffic signals! For simplicity many manufacturers use a numbering system to denote the darkness of the lens using a scale of 1 to 3. This helps you choose sunglasses by providing a system of filter categories that describe the darkness of the tint (luminous transmittance) such as Wholesale Sunglasses.

There are 3 filter categories

1 Light Tint from 43% to 80% luminous transmittance. 2 Medium Tint from 18% to 43% luminous transmittance. 3 Dark Tint from 8% to 18% luminous transmittance.

However other lenses such as Polarised lenses, Photo Chromatic lenses and Gradient tinted lenses don’t always adhere strictly to these guides. In summary:

Filter No 1 has little shade and used mainly to make a fashion statement. Filter No 2 is in between very light and dark and used mainly for outdoors. Filter No 3 is dark and used when lots of time is spent in the Sun. (Note: some American brands of sunglasses use different numbers for filtering e.g. Rayban’s aviation glasses are G15 which means green with 15% transmittance that is equivalent to our No 3)

The rest is down to styling, finishing, detail and personal preference

Mirror Coating can be added to the outside of your sunglass lenses to give that “cool” look!

Reflective sunglasses sometimes have a mirrored look. We call these “reflective lenses” and they have a reflective coating applied in a very thin, sparse layer — so thin that it’s called a half-silvered surface.

Hotels and Standards

Posted: under General Interest.

With the increase in fuel prices impacting on the costs of flights overseas, it is expected that there will be a jump in people having if not their first vacation then at least more general short breaks in the UK. The quality of hotels in the UK is marvelous and it is often uttered why so many individuals from the UK holiday overseas when they have some magnificent scenery in Scotland, The Lake District and the South West of England for example. One of my favourites was this Hotel in Newcastle. The state of the Euro will have a huge impact on British people taking European holidays and the UKtourist industry is hoping for a bumper 2009.

Boutique hotels are growing increasingly more popular, with the customer realising the service and individualism that arrives with them. These luxury, boutique hotels in Manchester are all personally-managed and owned hotels so the guest will discovery a quality of service and accommodation that will have even the most perceptive customer purring with joy.

On top of the outstanding service, these hotels generally have imaginatively rendered bedrooms and bathrooms, dining rooms with well-spaced tables and lots of fine linens and chinaware which emphasize the luxuriousness. So you will be really impressed by the quality on offer no cutting corners here.

Most have fine dining restaurants where the menus can extend from classical to contemporary, using locally sourced produce and which switch each day. The food is very important in a luxury hotel. Only the best chefs work in the top hotels.Receiving the greatest of environments, service and outstanding fittings need to be mixed with a restaurant which has an extraordinary menu. Conferencing is turning more fashionable at luxury hotels and a great one I went to recently was at this hotel in leeds . Management training classes, team building and leadership training can be held at most.

Children’s Aprons - When The Mess Has To Be Accounted For

Posted: under General Interest.

How many parents have witnessed their children gleefully making lots of curious treasures for mum and dad. Actually a lot of children make these things at school and bring them home. The one thing these children will have in common is the fact that many of them at the same time will be wearing a kitchen apron.

Children’s activities sometimes make a big mess, so a cooking apron comes in very handy. An apron that is the best for children, is one that will pull over the head and then tie it to their back. There are some types covering more of the child that go over the head and have a solid front and back with side fasteners.

There are many different designs and styles for Children’s aprons. One of the most cost efficient remedies is to fabricate your own. An apron has to be one of the easiest sewing tasks you could undertake, you can conjure up quite a unique project and personalize it to your own child. Child aprons can be decorated in a variety of ways: your child’s handprints and name can be printed on it, or even their favorite nursery rhyme, or a picture of their most cherished Disney character. You do not need to be the artist, most craft shops sell transfers or prints that you can apply to the finished apron to give it that personal ‘touch’.

You’re little sweet pea will have days that he/she wants to be of help to you in the kitchen. Times such as these, you’re really in need of an apron! The entire kitchen is in need of an apron. Sometimes it is a lot of fun to imitate Mum and wear a kitchen apron to do the cooking.

There is considerable scope for boys or girls in these days as a lot of good chefs on TV are men. Just be certain that your boy has something like a superhero on his apron, and your girl has something suitably girly. In any event, be certain to keep a child’s apron on hand for the next occasion when your youngster wants to play something messy.

Tales From A Kohler Kitchen Faucet

Posted: under General Interest.

Hi, my name is Leaky (I hate that nickname but you gave it to me). I’m your kitchen faucet. I don’t think you realize how important I am in your life. Stop and think for a moment how many times you touch me everyday. What about your children? They’re up here pulling on my handle all the time with their grubby little hands, sometimes yanking too hard and causing me to loosen my screws a little bit more each time. I love your children, but they don’t handle me with as much caution and some adults do.

Most of the time I go completely unnoticed. Sure, you have to touch me everyday, but you don’t really give me your undivided attention unless I’m dripping and annoying you. Hey, I get runny noses just like everyone else in the family, give me some doctoring!

I remember when you first saw me. I was sitting in the parts bin next to my brothers and sisters, and you were commenting about how much we cost, what features we had, what color we were and if we would be a good fit for your kitchen. I was so excited when you stopped to read my tags because I knew I was the perfect delta kitchen faucet for you. Then you crushed my hopes a little with your comments about how expensive I was. Good grief! I cost about $125 but your children are running you close to $10,000 a year! I see you look at them lovingly, but I just get a passing glance.

You compared me with my brothers and sisters and after a lot of grumbling you figured out what I knew all along. I was the perfect faucet for you. I am royalty you know. I’m related to all the best family lines; Moen, Kohler and Delta all have influenced my creation in some fashion.

I don’t think the general public understands how important I really am. You go to the store expecting to pay about $20 for a faucet and then get angry when you see that quality costs money. We’re no different than any other appliance (like a water softener or gadget in your kitchen; the best of us are more costly. We also come with a lot of neat features such as multiple handles, hot and cold settings with a hundred variations in between, some of us are even gold plated! We protect your kids with anti scald devices and give you the one thing you can’t live without: water. Why shouldn’t we demand a fair price for our services?

Go on, enjoy your day, but would you please just once stop to notice my beauty and service to your family? Speaking for all ignored kitchen faucets we would all appreciate it. Thanks.

Another kitchen gadget you should consider reading about is the dishwasher.

Apple Iphone - The dream gadget of 2009

Posted: under General Interest.

Unless you’ve been living under a rock for the past few years you will undoubtedly have heard of the Apple iPhone. This multimedia smartphone has the ability to seamlessly connect to the internet through a WiFi connection. With a highly intuitive touch screen interface, the Apple iPhone has truly broken new ground in interface design. Unlike many of the current smartphones on the market there is no physical keyboard, instead a virtual keyboard occupies the lower half of the screen when user text input is required.

In terms of features the iPhone has a full set of top-end multimedia functions including a built camera which can be used to produce visual voicemail along with the traditional audio and text messaging. A built in portable media player akin to the Ipod allows the playback of a range of audio and video content.

Apple provides a huge number of applications that can be downloaded via the built in ‘safari’ web browser, or through the itunes client on a PC. New applications specifically for the iPhone and the new Ipod touch come out almost daily, adding a rich and growing functionality to an already high specification smartphone. The most recent model released in July 08 uses the much faster data transfer speeds offered by 3G and the built in assisted GPS, which adds to the useability of this great phone.

Exercise Bikes

Posted: under General Interest.

Exercise bikes are a staple for nearly every professional gym and a great choice for home gyms because they do not take up a lot of space, are easy on the joints, and can deliver a pretty good workout depending on how hard you push yourself and what level you have it at. But before you make a choice out of all the exercise bikes that are out there, keep in mind that you should shop around before finding the best options and also contact your doctor to make sure you are medically able to use exercise bikes. Lauftraining

The nice thing about riding on one of the many exercise bikes that are out there is that you can easily watch television while riding it or even read a book or a magazine. On other forms of exercise equipment this is not an easy task because most of them require you to use your hands. A bike, however, does not require you to use your hands, even when you push yourself.

Another great thing about exercise bikes is that it tends to be great for people who have knee problems. Not only is it easier on the joints than something like running, but it also builds up the muscles around the knee which can help you manage your injury over the long term. However, if you do not set the exercise bikes to the proper level for your height, you could actually hurt your knee more. Ask a personal trainer or one of the people working at your gym if you have it set correctly. Kraftsport

If you would like to get a good workout using exercise bikes, you may want to wear a heart rate monitor. You may also want to vary the resistance and how hard you push yourself. This variation keeps your muscles and your heart guessing which translates to a better workout. Trainingsplan

If you decide to purchase an exercise bike, make sure you do your research and test a few out before you make a decision. Read reviews and ask others which exercise bikes they use. You will probably want to purchase a high quality model that has a lot of features if you want the best workout possible. However, if you are on a budget, a used or inexpensive exercise bike is a lot better than doing nothing.

Questech Sandgate and Dorset Collection

Posted: under General Interest.

Leading backsplash tile supplier My Tile Backsplash is pleased to announce the addition of both the Sandgate and Dorset Collection from Questech to there vast selection of backsplash material.

The Sandgate and Dorset Collection offers an array of decorative accents in both a natural stone and a metal look. Each Series has three different categories within each of the Sandgate and Dorset lines.

Questech Metals - Questech invented a breakthrough technology, a process for casting beautiful metal objects at a fraction of the weight and cost of solid metals. This discovery led to the launch of the industry’s first mass produced metal tiles, creating an important new category in the tile and home improvement markets. The difference between the two series of Sandgate and Dorset Collections is the style offerings between them. The colors that are offered are the same, just different designs between the two series.

Questech Cast Stone - Questech broke the mold again, with their revolutionary product of the cast stone series. These decorative pieces have a resemblance of natural stone with the look of travertine and marble. The product offering in this category is phenomenal. The selection includes everything from a 2″ x 2″ to a large 16″ x 24″ mural. Again, the color offering between the Sandgate and the Dorset collection are the same, just the different designs associated with each series.

Questech Natural Stone - This includes a factory-sealed tumbled marble collection offered in both Castle Wheat and Casa Emperador. Tumbled marble tiles have better wear properties, warmer feels, softer appearance and a matte finish. Tumbled Marble with Q-Seal provides a built-in anti-bacterial protection. Ultra-Fresh inhibits the growth of stain and odor causing mold and mildew. It is factory applied and will not lose its effectiveness over time. The added anti-bacterial protection makes the tiles ideal for showers, tub surrounds and kitchen backsplashes. They will never be the worry of having to reseal the tiles or worry about special stone cleaners.

As with all the products from Questech, each and every one of the products is sealed with their Q-Seal. The fear of sealing or water-damaged products does not exist with the Questech product line.

How To Print Laser Labels

Posted: under General Interest.

Printing high quality self-adhesive labels on a laser printer is simple. All you need to do is to put them in the paper tray so they will print portrait, put your printer software on the “labels” setting and then print as usual. For better positioning of the print you can use the media bypass slot usually positioned above the paper tray, this reduces the number of rollers the label sheet passes through and helps to prevent the print from slewing left at the top and right at the bottom of the A4 sheet.

The labels setting on your printer driver software is usually in the “settings” or “properties” section, and these options are on that rather annoying page that pops up every time you print something. Some of the more expensive or modern laser printers have auto sensing, which means they automatically sense the thickness of the media they are loaded with.

You do have to print A4 labels in a portrait direction; this is because, like wood, paper has a grain direction. The grain direction is from the top to the bottom of the sheet rather than side to side. The result of this is that the paper is more rigid along its length; this means that the labels are better supported on the backing paper and less likely to peel off the backing paper during printing.

Laser printers are not designed to print labels, they are designed to print thinner A4 sheets, so it is always a good idea to look in the printer manufacturer’s manual to find out what they advise for label printing. To enable the printers to print labels well you need to use laser labels made from laser grade paper and cut in a layout that also reduces the chances of separation from the backing during printing. Laser grade paper has a specified smoothness so that the laser toner can achieve the resolution you require.

Laser labels also have a certain water content this is essential and helps the toner to key into the paper when it passes through the fuser in your printer. (The fuser is like a heated mangle with the paper passing between two rollers one of which is heated.) If the labels dry out then the laser print will smudge so always keep unused labels in their packaging. Laser labels also have a [particular|certain} type of backing paper which provides enough friction so that the rollers in the printer can move it accurately.

Creating a Raised Bed

Posted: under General Interest.

If your current planting goals involve plants that require good water drainage, I am sure you know how frustrating it is to have a garden that just will not cooperate. Some plants can handle the excess water that comes about from being in an area that does not drain properly. In fact, it might just cause them to bloom more lushly. However, other plants do not cope as well, and it will cause them to die a gruesome, bloated death. You should always find out about the drainage required for every plant you buy, and make sure that it will not conflict with any of the areas you are considering planting it in.

In order to test how much water your designated patch of soil will retain, dig a hole approximately ten inches deep. Fill it with water, and come back in a day when all the water had disappeared. Fill it back up again. If the 2nd hole full of water is not gone in 10 hours, your soil has a low saturation point. This means that when water soaks into it, it will stick around for a long time before dissipating. This is unacceptable for almost any plant, and you are going to have to do something to remedy it if you want your plants to survive.

The usual method for improving drainage in your garden is to create a raised bed. This involves creating a border for a small bed, and adding enough soil and compost to it to raise it above the rest of the yard by at least 5 inches. You will be amazed at how much your water drainage will be improved by this small modification. If you are planning to build a raised bed, your prospective area is either on grass or on dirt. For each of these situations, you should build it slightly differently.

If you want to start a raised garden in a non grassy area, you will not have much trouble. Just find some sort of border to retain the dirt you will be adding. I have found that there is nothing that works quite as well as a few two by fours. After you have created the wall, you must put in the proper amount soil and steer manure. Depending on how long you plan to wait before planting, you will want to adjust the ratio to allow for any deteriorating that may occur.

If you are trying to install a raised bed where sod already exists, you will have a slightly more difficult time. You will need to cut the sod around the perimeter of the garden, and flip it over. This may sound simple, but you will need something with a very sharp edge to slice the edges of the sod and get under it. Once you have turned it all upside down, it is best to add a layer of straw to discourage the grass from growing back up. After the layer of straw, simply add all the soil and steer manure that a normal garden would need.

Planting your plants in your new area should not pose much difficulty. It is essentially the same process as your usual planting session. Just be sure that the roots do not extent too far into the original ground level. The whole point of creating the raised bed is to keep the roots out of the soil which saturates easily. Having long roots that extend that far completely destroys the point.

Once you have plants in your new bed, you will notice an almost immediate improvement. The added soil facilitates better root development. At the same time, evaporation is prevented and decomposition is discouraged. All of these things added together makes for an ideal environment for almost any plant to grow in. So do not be intimidated by the thought of adjusting the very topography of your yard. It is a simple process as I am sure you have realized, and the long term results are worth every bit of work.

Web Design, increase your usability

Posted: under General Interest.

It is easy to make a dorky web page. It’s also easy to make a very nice, clean, professional-looking web page even if you don’t have much design experience. Often the difference, even for beginning designers, is simply a matter of eliminating certain features that are guaranteed to make a page look amateurish. I’ve been going through the list of things that people - designers and non-designers - from around the country have cited as the things that make the difference between a well-designed and a poorly designed web page.

Here’s a list of ten additional design elements that will increase the usability of virtually all sites:

  1. Place your name and logo on every page and make the logo a link to the home page (except on the home page itself, where the logo should not be a link: never have a link that points right back to the current page).
  2. Provide search if the site has more than 100 pages.
  3. Write straightforward and simple headlines and page titles that clearly explain what the page is about and that will make sense when read out-of-context in a search engine results listing.
  4. Structure the page to facilitate scanning and help users ignore large chunks of the page in a single glance: for example, use grouping and subheadings to break a long list into several smaller units.
  5. Instead of cramming everything about a product or topic into a single, infinite page, use hypertext to structure the content space into a starting page that provides an overview and several secondary pages that each focus on a specific topic. The goal is to allow users to avoid wasting time on those subtopics that don’t concern them.
  6. Use product photos, but avoid cluttered and bloated product family pages with lots of photos. Instead have a small photo on each of the individual product pages and link the photo to one or more bigger ones that show as much detail as users need. This varies depending on type of product. Some products may even need zoomable or rotatable photos, but reserve all such advanced features for the secondary pages. The primary product page must be fast and should be limited to a thumbnail shot.
  7. Use relevance-enhanced image reduction when preparing small photos and images: instead of simply resizing the original image to a tiny and unreadable thumbnail, zoom in on the most relevant detail and use a combination of cropping and resizing.
  8. Use link titles to provide users with a preview of where each link will take them, before they have clicked on it.
  9. Ensure that all important pages are accessible for users with disabilities, especially blind users.
  10. Do the same as everybody else: if most big websites do something in a certain way, then follow along since users will expect things to work the same on your site. Remember Jakob’s Law of the Web User Experience: users spend most of their time on other sites, so that’s where they form their expectations for how the Web works.

Creating Customer Satisfaction Surveys that Work

Posted: under General Interest.

Why should you bother?

The life blood of any business is good customer service. New customers are important but good customer service will help generate customer loyalty and repeat business. With each satisfied customer your business is likely to win many more customers through recommendations and remember, if you are not taking care of your customers, your competition will.

A customer satisfaction survey will help by not only identifying problem areas but show that you care and are proactive in looking for ways to improve the service that you provide.

Where do you start?

Objective - Before you start compiling your survey consider what the objectives of the survey are, in that way you will remain focused and find it easier to decide what questions to ask.

Analysis - When the survey is complete consider how you will analyse the answers.

Bare in mind that ‘closed’ questions (where the respondents are asked to choose from a limited number of responses) are easier to analyse than questions that are ‘open’ (where the respondent can reply in anyway they want).

A great deal will depend on the expected volume of respondents, the higher the volume the more important it is to have an easy method of analysing the results.

Opportunity – As well as obtaining valuable market research data keep in mind that customer surveys are also a good way to advertise areas of your service that your customers may not be aware of.

Once you have drafted your survey read through the survey with a market research hat on and confirm that you are asking the right questions in the right way and that with the feedback information you will be able to make informed decisions.

Next, read through the survey from a marketing view point, check that you have phrased each question so that every opportunity has been taken to promote your business?

The ideal question will perform the following three functions:-

  • Market research - provide valuable feedback to help you improve your customer satisfaction levels and in turn your business
  • Marketing - promote aspects of your business
  • Information/Education - advertise a service that you provide that your customers may not have been unaware of

For example:- Do you find the in-store baby changing facilities useful?

In asking this question the store will hopefully not only receive useful feedback on the baby changing facility but they will also promote the store as being child-friendly even beyond the customers who actually require the facility.

Warts and all – to benefit most from a customer survey you need to be prepared to accept criticism.

A customer satisfaction survey should be designed to identify any problem areas so that they can be fixed; conducting regular customer satisfaction will help prevent complacency and will also give early warning on where you may be losing business to your competitors initiatives.

What questions should you ask?

Although it is a given that each business is likely to have specific and unique factors that are important in providing good customer services there are common areas that are relevant to all businesses be they a physical store, online internet store or a service industry. The following are key areas to providing good customer service.

Communication - Are you confident that you make it easy for your customers to communicate with you?

When a customer telephones is the phone answered promptly; are enquiries about products or services properly handled? A good business will make every effort to ensure that whatever the customers query it is resolved by the right person, quickly, politely and fairly.

If there are reported problems that cannot be resolvable immediately do you promise to respond in a given time period and do you deliver on your promise?

Use a customer satisfaction survey to confirm that your customers find all your staff to be helpful, courteous and knowledgeable.

Location – Do your customers find it easy to visit you, if a physical bricks and mortar store, is it conveniently located with good access?

Making it pleasant, making it easy - For an internet business it is important to ensure that your website is easy to use and aesthetically pleasing.

Regardless of the store being a bricks and mortar or purely online web based store, is the store properly laid out and can your customers find what they need and is there sufficient detailed information and help on hand to explain how a particular product works?

The right quality products – In addition to measuring the quality of the service that you provide you should ensure that the products and services that you provide do in fact match your customers’ requirements.

Value for money – Cheap or expensive is hardly ever a good measure, value for money is.

Do your current customers consider the products you sell or the services you provide as value for money, if not, why not?

Speed and attention – No matter what the business, the majority of customers will want to be dealt with quickly but attentively.

Are you doing everything you can to avoid any delay?

A good business will try to treat each customer as an individual, does yours? Attention is one thing but this has to be hand- in-hand with a quick and satisfactory resolution of the query.

Demographics and Specific issues – Take the opportunity to profile your customers, for example where do they live and what is their age group?

By understanding your customers more, the better your chances of correctly targeting your business.

Within the survey encourage customers to highlight their problems and provide contact details.

What next?

Analyze the results once the survey has been completed.

Trends – Look for specific and common areas where the service needs improving.

Ask yourself if any criticism is valid, be honest to yourself, is there anything that can be done to properly resolve, or at the very least, minimise the problem?

Training – Are all employees properly trained and do they have sufficient knowledge?

Where staff training programmes have been implemented have they had a positive impact on the business?

Follow-up – If a customer who has completed a survey has raised a specific issue ensure that they are contacted and their complaint addressed.

Do not squander the opportunity to resolve a problem and keep a customer.

Continuously Monitor - Make changes based on the survey results and then re-measure by issuing further surveys.

If you are concerned about customer satisfaction and would like to view a sample survey for a store that will demonstrate some of the above advice please view the Sample Customer Survey

Asset Finance and Leasing for UK Businesses

Posted: under General Interest.

Asset finance or leasing enables the purchase of any equipment associated with your company, from vehicles to computer equipment. Leasing gives you all the benefits of ownership but without the concern of the asset depreciating in value. Payments can also be set against taxable profits in the UK, which makes this a most tax efficient way to equip businesses.

Factoring & invoice discounting can also release up to 85% against unpaid sales invoices within 24 hours. The remaining balance is paid when your customers pay their outstanding invoices. Asset based lending including invoice discounting is usually available to businesses with an annual credit turnover of £250K or more.

So what are the main advantages of asset finance and leasing?

Save working capital - When businesses buy equipment outright, the capital invested becomes tied up in a depreciating asset, stopping them from investing in other projects. Leasing, however, allows you to save resources for other purposes, such as new business opportunities, unexpected costs, business development or marketing.

Easier budgeting - Payments are fixed for the full agreement period and are not affected by inflation or changes in interest rates. Therefore, businesses can accurately plan for their finance payments in advance, helping to simplify the budgeting process.

Maintain existing credit lines - Existing credit lines arranged with a bank or other funders remain intact. As a result, businesses have the extra flexibility to still use their bank’s facilities if necessary in the future.

No deposit - A deposit need not be a pre-requisite of the finance arrangement. Businesses simply make regular payments throughout the life of the agreement.

Tax efficient - With many forms of finance agreements, payments may be offset against taxable profits, reducing the net cost overall.

Upgrade opportunities - Finance allows businesses to keep up-to-date with advancing technology and to respond to changing needs. Businesses can add to or upgrade their original installation to accommodate unforeseen changes in their requirements.

Convenience - Payments can be made by direct debit. Multiple payments can be collected on one single monthly or quarterly direct debit, saving on bank charges and administration.

Flexibility - Individual leasing agreements, including contract lengths, are tailored to meet the particular needs of each business, ensuring that the payments match the company’s existing and planned budget.

Mail order companies offering adherent lenses via Internet at favorable prices

Posted: under General Interest.

Do you want to purchase adherent lenses and care products online at a advantageous rate? Then you can find tenderers of contact lenses to get your contact lenses delivered home very cheaply and quickly. If you are already experienced in handling adherent lenses and know what type of lenses fit your personal requirements best, then you can order your adherent lenses and accessories comfortably at one of these vendors onlineshops: guenstige farbige Kontaktlinsen bestellen.

The company Lenscare has been active in the market since 1995 as a mail order house selling adherent lenses and belongs to the longest active suppliers in this sector. Lenscare has been awarded as “Best Online Shop 2006″ by the association of German mailorder business. On the other hand the Lenscatcher Ltd. provides an excellent online shop for adherent lenses and lens care products and is one of the leading online retailers in Europe too. This excellent online mail order business gives a very high cost advantage to their customers.

The company Lenscare is one of Europes largest mail order firms of adherent lenses and offers their customers a toll-free helpdesk around the clock as well as expert advice by an optician and a trained team. The delivery of ordered products is usually made after 2 working days. At their onlineshop you will receive contact lenses, cleaning products and accessories. Besides the high quality brand Lenscare you also will find there other popular brands, such as Ciba Vision and Bausch & Lomb. Buying adherent lenses on the Internet is reasonable for people, who already have gathered experience with contact lenses, know their data and the optimal type of lenses for themselves and therefore actually do not need further personal help from an ophthalmologist or optician. The choice between dimensionally stable and soft lenses should be made according to the personal requirements of the wearer. Thereby play a role, for example, the duration and frequency of wearing, the environment and any tendency to dry eyes. If you like to take exercise outdoors, where increased dust or dirt can be expected, such as track and field athletics or soccer on the hard court, horseback riding or mountain biking, you will tend to soft day-lenses that are dumped after singular use.

Inherently stable and hard contact lenses are particularly oxygen permeable and swim on the tears film of the eye, which then is better served with nutrients and oxygen than it is when using soft lenses. They are therefore particularly well suited for dry air and air-conditioned rooms. Important for a purchase order at one of the online senders is to know the exact data of the own lenses, that means e.g. the size of the lenses in diopter, their concavity, moisture content and aperture. By having a corneal irregularity you need to know the concerning additional data. If you are not skilled with adherent lenses you must first visit your oculist and optician. You can read a German recommendation of Lenscare and Lenscatcher on the following site: guenstige Kontaktlinsen im Onlineshop bestellen. People who did not yet wear adherent lenses, should be provided with their first pair of lenses by an oculist and optician and should learn from them about the advantages and disadvantages of different solutions. If one has collected appropriate experience and also has the exact data of their optical lenses on hand, a replacement order at an online shop should be quite easy. A corneal irregularity or astigmatism is corrected with the so-called toric lens. Here the shopper also needs the exact additional data for cylinder and axis. Furthermore there are cosmetic contact lenses available in various colors that allow the wearer changing the color of their eyes.

Diet Advice For Everyone

Posted: under General Interest.

Disclaimer: This posting is based on information publicly available in the popular press and medical journals that deal with losing fat. Nothing herein is intended to be or should be interpreted to be any sort of medical advice. For medical advice the reader should consult with his or her doctor or other medical specialist.

With a quick search on the internet, one will find that there are literally thousands of weight loss products being advertised online. It is no wonder that search terms such as “how to lose weight” are among the most heavily searched in the health/fitness niche. Among the most popular are the products that contain some sort of miracle ingredient from another country, such as the brand new guarana pure. With the acai craze dying down, guarana seems to be aiming for the top of the very same market. Although actual experiences are hard to come by, the drug seems to be doing pretty well when used in conjunction with regular diet/exercise.

Yet another weight loss fad that has been around for years is the notion that our colons need to be cleansed if we want to lose weight and be healthier. A top product in this niche is called power colon cleanse and is experiencing growing popularity. It supposedly uses ingredients widely known to clean the colon of toxins and pave the way for a healthier, thinner lifestyle. Again, when these products are so heavily promoted it is hard to say how well they work, but from some basic searching online it seems to be doing pretty well compared to other such cleanses.

Finally, there is a third category of weight loss products that are sweeping the world by storm known as vegetable cleanses. They apparently work similar to other cleanses but they boast the antioxidant power of vegetables. A new product in this niche is called the veggie9 cleanse which includes numerous leafy green vegetables that are said to have healing properties for the human body.

Choose a Practical yet Fashionable Comforter

Posted: under General Interest.

If you go inside a home decorating boutique, you’ll surely notice countless brands of the hot pink comforter, piled in an mixture of colors and designs. But you still can’t decide yet, so you went online to hopefully slim down your options into, say, at least twenty. In one website visit, you were bombarded with fine-quality silk, wool, velvet and other kinds. How will you ever choose the precise comforter for you?

In choosing comforters, you might want to pay attention to the present color palette of your quarters. This will serve as your basis in choosing exact colors and designs that can boost the overall look and feel of your bedroom space. Once you have narrowed down your color choices, pick out specific designs too. Do you want your comforters to be just plain colored or with simple [flowery|floral} prints? Maybe you’d want to go for something enjoyable like lines, loops or animal prints. How about trying a reversible comforter that has a dissimilar color and design in each side?

Once you have established the colors and designs that you love, it’s time to decide on the material type. If you want to pamper yourself in luxurious and plush material, buy velvet, silk or satin comforters. There is also another lavish comforter fabric that’s acquiring popularity, the microsuede. Microsuede comforters are inexpensive compared to the genuine suede and it is also easier to clean and preserve. If you’re a simple person with straightforward tastes, there are also cotton, wool and polyester comforters.

After you have the color, design and comforter fabric decided, confirm the size of the comforters. There are comforters that just sit atop your mattress and but you can also buy larger size for maximum warmth and comfortability.

Regardless of what comforters you choose, they will surely reflect your personality all over the bedroom.

Effective Guidelines Homeowners Should Follow When Choosing The Best Memory Foam Mattresses

Posted: under General Interest.

It can be a little overwhelming to go shopping for a memory foam bed and mattress. There are so many new terms and options available that it can be a real challenge. The three most important things to look for include temperature sensitivity, thickness of the memory foam, and density.

Knowing a little about each of these can allow you to choose the perfect memory foam product. Not every memory foam mattress includes temperature sensitivity. That is unfortunate as it is one of the most important features of memory foam. The memory foam will not be nearly as comfortable if it is not temperature sensitive. If you can afford to buy a memory foam mattress that is temperature sensitive you will be very glad you did.

This features enables the mattress to absorb some of you body heat and soften up to support the key problem areas of your body. When shopping for a memory foam mattress look for a model with a thick enough layer of memory foam along the top. You want one with at least three and a half inches of memory foam. A thin layer of memory foam will not provide the same amount of comfort.

You will also need to look at density when buying a memory foam mattress. The density of a memory foam mattress refers to the weight when measured in cubic feet. Many people have differing ideas as to the correct density for memory foam. Often retailers will try and sell you memory foam with a three pound density.

You will get much better support for your back, hips and shoulders if you select a memory foam mattress with a density of around 5.0 to 5.9 pounds. Many find that products with a density greater than six pounds are not that comfortable. Be sure that there is a warranty included with whatever memory foam product you purchase. It is common for high quality products to include a warranty of at least 20 years.

The Office Chairs from Aeron will Provide Support and Comfort

Posted: under General Interest.

An Aeron chair is an excellent investment if you spend a long time sitting in the office, or just prefer a more comfortable seat for when you do. Although more expensive than many other types of chair, the Aeron chair is certainly worth the investment.

There is a problem with many chairs in that the back support is often inadequate. Ask anyone who works in an office and they’re more than likely to tell you they at times suffer from back aches and muscle strains, which is often because of the office chair.

Aeron chairs are designed for the latest in ergonomics. They can be used by almost all sizes and weights of people, and can be adjusted so that they are a perfect fit for the person using them. With adjustable or fixed armrests, lumbar support, and variation in bases for different surfaces, almost anyone will find these chairs ideal.

For employees, these chairs can even repay the investment with improved productivity. Rather than staff complaining about back aches and taking days off because of these problems, it may very well be worth buying Aeron office chairs. The Aeron chairs are available in 3 sizes depending on the weight and height of the person sitting on it, but these 3 sizes cover a wide range to suit anyone.

Of course it’s not only the short term problems that can occur from prolonged sitting on inadequate office chairs, but also the serious long term damage that can result from poor support of the back. The Herman Aeron chair undergoes intensive tests to ensure that it can provide strength and durability.

By searching online you can often find some excellent deals on these chairs. Whereas your local computer or office store may have a selection of ergonomic chairs, the internet will often beat them on price and variety.

An Insight into Shooting Stock Photography

Posted: under General Interest.

Introduction

Welcome to An Insight into Stock Photography. This article is based on a talk given at Focus on Imaging 2007. I hope you find it interesting. Just remember these are my views only, they are not gospel and have been put together based solely on my experience of shooting and selling stock photography, primarily through Alamy and photographic magazines.

We’ve seen a lot of change in the markets and the economy in general. This has affected the stock photography market. But don’t lose hope, magazines and newspapers have an insatiable appetite for images.

One Approach

Not having all your eggs in one basket - and finding opportunities to build a business in photography. And stock photography is just part of that - a chance for someone else to market your pictures for you and to for you to get paid, while off doing something else. It’s like having commission only sales people working for you. The thing is you have to give them something saleable but you can’t give them a kick up the backside if you’re not selling much!!

Some professional photographers don’t do it, some do, some make a living from it. The choices and balance is up to you, as a commercial photographer I do some of it.

It may seem like an uphill challenge but it’s not and it’s within most people’s grasp. Provided you understand the customer. This applies to both the Picture Library and the Ultimate Buyers.

Take a look around you. Pictures are everywhere - the printed media in its widest context has a massive appetite for images on a daily basis.

Humans generally don’t like reading online - well not for very long - they like tactile magazines to flick though and dip into and if they didn’t, the newspaper industry would be long gone by now - wouldn’t it !!

Every magazine, exhibition, web site, company brochure and newspaper all need images on a regular basis - and if they don’t have it or can’t send a photographer to go out and shoot it - then they’ll buy it.

Printed media works on deadlines that go right down to the wire, so immediacy is important and the shots can’t be the same old ones used month in month out.

The corporate buyer generally will work to longer lead times and less tight deadlines - but not always - the images they buy can be more general or iconic - like these motivation posters you see in some work places.

Take for instance a sports shot of runners on a track - you might see it in the sports pages of a newspaper for a day, then maybe in a Athletics magazine that month - but it can soon become a poster with a motivational statement “Defeat” or “Winner” that has a whole new market.

So where are you - the photographer - in the food chain so to speak. Take a look below.

• The Photographer
• The Stock Library
• The Picture Buyer

You’re on the top of the list with the stock library between you and the buyer, but at the bottom of the food chain when it comes to getting paid. But whilst you need to meet the technical requirements of the library and other submission requirements, it’s the image buyer you must be thinking of long before you even contemplate picking up the camera.

The picture library will do the sales and marketing of your images, for a cut which varies from library to library, but they must have images that buyers want.

Before you sign up, read through the agreement and see if the set up suits your requirements.

Diverse Sectors

Each of these publications, Gossip magazines, The Times Newspaper, Corporate Publications, serve a different market - but each buy photos from Alamy to mention just one library - they also buy from many others too - in order to make the publication that day, week or month.

So what sort of pictures do these publications buy? Well it’s very varied. Just glance through and look at the side of the shot, it’s likely to have an image source next to it.

• Take a Break - items / products, staged poses - youth etc.
• Daily mail - travel
• Environment - utilities, waste, pollution etc, - front cover.

Easy Money - NO!

Some say it’s a numbers game - true to some extent, but the way I look at it is this, if you’ve got 10,000 images of shots that won’t sell - you’ve got nothing .

For me as a professional photographer that provides photography services, it’s the long term view - looking to develop and maintain a set of saleable images.

Remember pictures are perishable - i.e. - they go out of date - and this will vary dependent upon the industry sector or subject they apply to.

Transport, fashion, IT, business, communications all need, in my view, re-shooting each year. For example a man in a suit by a computer the size of a house in the 1950’s isn’t the modern industry image of today.

Wildlife, sky scenes, landscapes, travel pictures - less so - but look at any developing city - take London - since the Wheel and the Gherkin went up all the skylines are different, also look at Dubai - changing all the time.

Easy money - no it’s not - but you can build up an underlying income if you think about saleable pictures and keep them relevant - remember they have to illustrate a story - so need to tell a story in their own right.

What is Stock

So let’s take a look at how you get in and who there is to choose from. Each Library has its own benefits and key target markets, so find one that suits you and what you are good at shooting.

• Getty
• Alamy
• Comstock
• Jupiter
• Superstock
• Fotolibra
• Istockphoto,
• Pixtal
• Jumpimages
• Adams
• Nevstock

Most will have web sites and these will stipulate how to join of make submissions.

$ Sites

Personally I don’t like them and here’s why. I’m going to set you a challenge and at the end of it I will buy the photograph from you. So you go and shoot a subject you like, do your research, do the shoot, post produce the image and upload it to my site and hey presto - I pay you 50p at today’s exchange rate — any takers ? I rest my case!

Submission Rules

All image libraries will set technical requirements and these will vary depending on how much server space they want to invest in.

Alamy work to 48mb TIFF minimum - 1, to keep the bar high enough that only the serious photographer applies and 2, to give their customers’ choice and immediate access to high quality images. Now they’ve changed this from the above to accept JPEG images - so your file size is down to around 8 meg.

Others work on thumbnail sizes then let the buyer contact you. Personally, I think, trying to judge a shot off a 100 or 200k image is not doing the shot justice.

Others specify minimum requirements of camera / model, or make you go though an approval or recommendation process. The thing with this is to find a library that matches your needs and capabilities. Also the amount time you have available to dedicate to stock photography.

Licenses

Non-Exclusive License

The buyer pays a licence fee each time they use the image, but another picture buyer can also purchase and use the image under the same licence.

The picture buyer must specify, each time: intended use, media, territory and duration.

Pricing is based on intended use, media, duration and territory. The territorial pricing will be matched to the specific country.

Exclusive License

The image buyer pays a licence fee each time they use the image.

The image buyer obtains exclusive use of an image under the terms of the licence: these terms may affect the use, media, territory and/or duration in which the image can by used by other buyers.

Rights protection can be an advantage for high-profile projects such as ad campaigns and promotions.

Royalty Free (RF)

The image buyer pays a one-off fee - they do not have to pay royalties to contributors on a use-by-use basis.

The picture buyer will not know who else is using the image.

The picture buyer should check that the image has the appropriate releases before using the image where a release is required, for example Model release for people and property release for prominent buildings or logos.

Commission

  • 50/50
  • 60/40 but with global distribution
  • 70/30
  • 80/20 - Photographers Direct

Again find one that works for you and also find out when you’ll get paid and any minimum balances you must have to get paid. Sometimes you can wait 3 months for your money.

Work Flow

As a provider of photography services I shoot RAW and make minor adjustments to pictures . Now I’m using Adobe Lightroom in place of Raw Shooter and it’s speeded up my work flow considerably. Photoshop - I use this far less now but only to colour and touch out any dirt or what might look like dirt - by this I mean the occasional bird in the sky can look like sensor dust if it’s a way off in the distance. Resize your image. Output the file to the required format.

Then depending on the library upload over the Internet or cut a CD / DVD.

An Example

Take an older camera the Nikon D70 - 6.1 mega pixel camera. Raw files were around 4 or 5 MB and a TIFF was at 17MB with the JPEG at 4MB.

To meet the submission guidelines you need to Interpolate the image - make it bigger. In Photoshop this was Image > Image Size>Percent. Increase by 168% to give a 48 - 50 MB sized image. Then Save as Jpeg - 5 - 7MB.

I now shoot on a Nikon D300. RAW files are now 18 - 19 mb, opened in CS3 at 34 mb - requiring interpolation by only 20%.

What I’ve Sold

Wonderful sunsets, superb travel pictures, glamour images, or maybe my Dad’s cat! These are just a few examples of shots that have sold.
My dad’s cat, police cars, road signs, street scenes in New York, studio models and traffic jams.

Finding More Value

There are plenty of magazines that will promote your sold work, FPME (Now out of print March 2009) is just one of them and if you have sold a shot just let the editor know - chances are it can earn you some more money.

Not only that, look out for sites like Photographer Direct that offer an Image Request service - all you need to do is send 1 email. Also look to the corporate clients - they too may take an image if it fits with their style - be brave, make that approach, but do your research first.

Top Tips

  • Find a stock library that suits you
  • Don’t be put off by submission specifications
  • Know your end image buyer
  • Start shooting what you are comfortable with - then move on
  • Check out what images already exist
  • Read the Picture Needs
  • Remember pictures images are perishable
  •

Check out how many pictures of your subject matter already exist in a library, then ask yourself - can these be improved, shot differently or updated.

Read the picture needs issued by Stock libraries, they tell you what sells and what is needed, don’t ignore them.

Thank you for reading this article, I hope you found it interesting, should you have any questions, please feel free to make contact through the web site.

Companies offering periodical subscriptions via Internet

    Posted: under General Interest.

Subscribing to a periodical is a great way to get your favorite magazine on a regular basis. Nowadays it is possible to order newspapers and journals online. Doing so will help the customer to get their journal right after it has been published. If you are interested in German newspapers and magazines, the following site reviews some important companies offering magazine subscriptions: Boerse Online Abonnement bestellen.

What are the advantages of subscribing to your favorite journal instead of buying it each time it is published, and what are some special rules for buying German magazine subscriptions?

Virtually any newspaper or periodical can be ordered online. So everybody should be able to find their favorite one quickly and easily. A journal subscription without minimum duration can be used as a gift itself. If you have chosen the wrong periodical and the presentee does not like the specific periodical you can cancel the subscription or switch over to another one. The subscriptions normally come with some very nice bonuses. You can get valuable benefits like money, gift vouchers or electronic devices. These benefits are often worth several months of the subscription rate.

It is important to know that the bonuses coming with a new subscription normally cannot be taken by the new subscribers themselves but by the person who recommended the new subscriber. So it is useful to order the new subscription together with a friend or family member. One plays the role of the new customer and the other one gets the gift. There are suppliers who offer subscriptions without minimum duration. These can be cancelled at any time or can be switched over to another journal title. However these non minimum duration subscriptions do not come with valuable bonuses. You can quickly choose your favorite magazine - e.g. this one: Benjamin Bluemchen Abonnement bestellen - and order it online in no time. Most online sellers of magazines offer special gift subscriptions. These are a very good idea for everybody who is looking for a nice birthday or wedding present.

Seeing the country in a kayak

    Posted: under General Interest.

As many of you know, I have been involved with the kayak rental Galveston Bay organization for many years. I absolutely love to kayak and have owned and personally built almost every type and size of kayak including sit-ins to sit-upons and both single person and two person models.

I have never been especially fond of ocean kayaking but prefer the tranquility and calm of floating down a quiet lagoon or exploring the hidden coves of a fresh water lake.

A few months ago, my best friend Tony and I decided to pack our favorite kayaks on top of my Hummer and travel around the country for a couple months exploring different places to splash our boats. The trip actually got extended to almost seven months but that one of the benefits of being semi-retired and not needing to go to a job. The trip also ended up taking us out of the country to Canada which hadn’t been in our original plan.

Needless to say, we had some unbelievable experiences! We kayaked mountain streams in Colorado, some beautiful lakes in Minnesota and many, many other truly fantastic spots.

One of the places we kayaked that was especially nice and rather surprising was in the Boston, MA area. We had heard that the back bays and estuaries around Boston were a particularly interesting area to kayak and we definitely found that to be true. It was amazing to find such primitive areas and wildlife within just a few miles of Harvard Square.

The only problem we had with Boston is that it is almost as expensive as New York and we had to do some serious hunting to find affordable inexpensive Boston hotels. We succeeded but the funny thing is that we then left the country to kayak the St. Clair lakes chain outside of Montreal, Canada and by that time we were ready to indulge ourselves and went shopping for the best hotels Montreal.

We finally made it back to Houston after almost seven months of traveling and kayaking with memories that I hope we will never forget.
